 DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL'S ADDRESS

“I am haunted by humans”

~Markus Zusak

Greetings, Delegates,

Today, uncertainty has become the lifeline of the present. Geopolitical tensions, economic instability, conflict, genocide are just a few of the thousands of words to describe what is happening in the world right now but it is these aspects that remind us that change is the only constant and it is only the fittest who shall survive the test of time. Beginning from a U.S. president criticising Ukraine for protecting its sovereignty to supporting genocide in the middle east, we live in a time where any moment may become a transition into dystopia, a point of no return.

Welcome to LMCMUN - where we do not simply engage in discussions; we embody the spirit of diplomacy and leadership that the world so desperately needs. Each committee session is a microcosm of global politics, where delegates step into the shoes of policymakers, activists, and world leaders to negotiate their way through pressing issues. Every stance taken, every resolution drafted, and every argument presented is a step toward understanding the complexity of global affairs. In a world where decisions made at an international level can be hindered by a simple veto by a country, a world where deadlock is the obstacle to diplomacy, Model United Nations provides a platform where cooperation succeeds competition and resolution succeeds conflict. However, limiting diplomacy to the realms of international policies, legislations and laws is restricting its true meaning, which is the people who constitute it. Diplomacy is about ensuring voices no matter how small are heard. At LMCMUN, we believe in creating an environment where debate is not limited to its traditional boundaries but rather where unique ideas and perspectives are embraced.

Here, uncertainty does not deter us; it drives us to think, to challenge, to change. As the Deputy Secretary-General of LMCMUN, I invite you all to immerse yourselves in this environment of chaos and resolution. Over the three days of the conference, delegates will be able to engage themselves in making new blocs, confront contemporary  geopolitical challenges and face the pressure of resolving conflicts within a limited timeframe.

But more importantly, you will have the opportunity to voice your opinion—to question, to challenge, and to inspire. Welcome to LMCMUN, where uncertainty meets action, diplomacy finds its voice, and the leaders of tomorrow take their first steps.

Until May,
Shuddho Nag,
Deputy Secretary-General,
La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations 2025.
